INTERCALATION
The process by which calendars are kept seasonally consistent by
interjecting additional days or months at various intervals over the course of
several years. "Leap Year" is a perfect example of intercalation. Although a
solar year takes 365.25 days, our civic year lasts only 365. Adding an extra
day to February every fourth year prevents the civic calendar from falling too
far behind the solar.
