Tens of Thousands of Pictures Now Easier to Find!
Now you can locate pictures in the Perseus Digital Library more quickly, using the new Image Browser tool which displays thumbnail-sized versions of pictures side-by-side on a single page. You can access the Image Browser from several places in the Perseus library. First, if a search in the Lookup Tool finds results from the Art & Archaeology catalogs or image captions, a Thumbnails button next to the results will enable you to load pictures into the Image Browser (examples: search for capital and browse column capitals in Perseus, or search for Sicily, and see pictures of Sicilian places and objects. Click any of the Thumbnails buttons on the Lookup Tool's results page to load images into the Image Browser. When displaying thumbnails for sculpture and vases, two representative pictures for each object will load in the Image Browser. This is particularly useful for getting a quick overview of all the pictures or objects available in Perseus which might interest you.
The Image Browser can also be loaded with pictures from the results of a search within one of the art and archaeology catalogs. Search for vases depicting Artemis and see pictures of the results by clicking the View Thumbnails button at the top of the results page. Again, the Image Browser will display two representative pictures from each vase found in the search.
Finally, the Image Browser is accessible from the Browse Images link at the top of any Art & Archaeology catalog page. You can follow this link to load all the available pictures of a place or an object into the Image Browser (for example, the 18 pictures of the Diana of Gabii, a sculpture in the Louvre).
The Image Browser is the first in a new set of tools which will enable more flexible and customizable access to the 33,000+ pictures freely available in the Perseus Digital Library. The pictures, including thousands of views of ancient sculpture, vases, coins, architecture, and sites, are linked through the Art & Archaeology catalogs, the Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites, the Perseus Lookup Tool, and the new Image Browser. We are committed to making as much of our photographic archive available as we can, and we are continuing work with museums to arrange for free access for all our users. (Read the update on the museums enabling free image access.) We're working hard, too, to improve the pictures you see. In the coming months, we plan to provide access to larger, higher-resolution versions of some pictures from the Perseus archive. As always, check the Perseus Digital Library for news and updates on improvements and additions.
