High Resolution Images in a Catalog of Greek Coins from the Dewing Numismatic Foundation

July 10, 2000

The Perseus Project and the Dewing Numismatic Foundation are pleased to announce the availability of high resolution images to illustrate a catalog of Greek Coins from the Dewing Collection. 452 Greek coins from this important collection, on loan to the Harvard University Art Museums, are now illustrated with high resolution images in the Perseus coin catalog.

This online publication takes full advantage of interconnections in the Perseus library by allowing keyword and full-text searching using the Perseus lookup tool (e.g. "grape", depicted on 28 coins), and the English word and phrase search tool (e.g., a search for the words "dolphin" and "rider" close together).

The release of these high resolution images follows the recent release of a new online coin catalog from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, our first presentation of full-resolution pictures on the Perseus Project. Now visitors to any image display page for a Dewing coin or an MFA coin may choose from two or three resolutions (depending on the size of the coin) ranging from small (ca. 600 pixels wide, corresponding with the old Perseus standard image size) to large (up to ca. 3000 pixels wide). The large images allow viewers to zoom in closely and look at fine details.

The Perseus Project is extremely grateful to Jonathan Avery of the Dewing Numismatic Foundation for permission to make these materials freely available. We also extend our thanks to Prof. David Mitten, Amy Brauer, Karen Manning, and Richard Benefield of the Harvard University Art Museums.

We welcome your feedback and any comments on how you are making use of these resources.
