Announcing the Perseus Image Browser:
a new way to see pictures in Perseus
October 30, 1999
The Perseus Project is happy to announce the addition of an image browsing tool to the Perseus digital library. This tool allows users to display thumbnail-sized versions of pictures side-by-side on a single page.
You can access the Image Browser from several places in the Perseus library. First, if a search in the Lookup Tool finds results from the art and archaeology catalogs or image captions, a Thumbnails button next to the results will enable you to load pictures into the Image Browser (examples: search for capital and browse column capitals in Perseus, or search for Sicily, and see pictures of Sicilian places and objects. Click any of the Thumbnails buttons on the Lookup Tool's results page to load images into the Image Browser). When displaying thumbnails for sculpture and vases, two representative pictures for each object will load in the Image Browser. This is particularly useful for getting a quick overview of all the pictures or objects available in Perseus which might interest you.
The Image Browser can also be loaded with pictures from the results of a search within one of the art and archaeology catalogs, by clicking the View Thumbnails button at the top of the results page (example: a search for vases depicting Artemis). Again, the Image Browser will display two representative pictures from each object found in the search.
Finally, the Image Browser is accessible from the Browse Images link at the top of any art and archaeology catalog page, as well. You can follow this link to load all the available pictures of a place or an object into the Image Browser (for example, the 18 pictures of the Diana of Gabii, a sculpture in the Louvre).
The Image Browser is the first in a new set of tools which will enable more flexible and customizable access to the 30,000+ pictures freely available in the Perseus digital library. We welcome any comments or suggestions about this tool at webmaster@perseus.tufts.edu.
