Announcing Pictures of Art Works from the Louvre

March 16, 1999

The Perseus Project is pleased to announce new photographs of sculptures and vases from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, that are now freely available to all users of the Perseus Web site. Over 2100 images illustrate Perseus catalog entries on 65 sculptures (e.g. the Choiseul Marble) and 101 vases (e.g. the name vase of the Painter of Louvre K 240) from the Louvre's important collections.

The art works from the Musée du Louvre, along with those from other museums, are found in the Art & Archaeology catalogs, which may be accessed from our home page or from the side bar on each page, by clicking on Art & Archaeology. Within the sculpture browser one may search for objects organized by collection, context, period, region, class, material, scale, sculptor or associated buildings. Similarly, within the vase browser one may search for objects organized by collection, ware, shape, painter, potter, context, period or region. Both catalogs are fully interconnected with the Perseus digital library and objects may also be accessed through Perseus' keyword and English index searches. For example, a keyword search for tables on vases reveals 28 vases, of which five are in the Louvre.

The Perseus Project thanks Drs. Alain Pasquier and Martine Denoyelle of the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre for making these materials available on the Web.
