Announcing a Greek and Latin Synonym Tool

August 23, 1999

The Perseus Project is pleased to announce a new tool for exploring possible synonyms of Greek and Latin words. This tool is fully integrated with the Lewis and Short Latin Lexicon and the Liddell, Scott, and Jones Greek Lexicon in Perseus. To see the possible synonyms for a word, simply look up that word in the Greek or Latin lexicon. A table will appear at the head of each dictionary entry suggesting possible synonyms for the word. You can view the dictionary entries for the suggested synonyms by clicking on the word. A list of more suggested synonyms is available by following the links below the table. The synonym lists are generated by computational analysis of dictionary definitions and not every suggested synonym will be appropriate.

See, for example, the definitions for the Latin pudor or the Greek muthos.

This tool was created by Jeff Rydberg-Cox with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities Division of Preservation and Access. We welcome any comments or suggestions about this tool at webmaster@perseus.tufts.edu.
