Perseus Tiles

Many rights holders are concerned about unauthorized use of high-resolution images. It would be, in theory, possible for a program to reconstruct the original high resolution images, thus opening up the possibility for unauthorized use. Since our goal is to provide as much high quality information over the Web as possible, we have implemented a modest scheme that we call Perseus Tiles.

When we break up large images into separate "tiles", we rotate each tile slightly and vary the overlap between tiles. The differences are virtually imperceptible to users moving from tile to tile but they would make it difficult to reconstruct the source image from the pieces. This technique thus provides rights holders with some protection while allowing users to see objects in far greater detail than is possible with lower resolution data.

Perseus Tiles are part of the overall Perseus digital library system. They are implemented on Linux and use generic software tools.
