The Achilles Painter
John H. Oakley, The College of William and Mary in Virginia

10. White Ground: Late Phase

Table of Contents | Previous Section | Next Section

During the painter's Late period (435-430/25 B.C.) he moves to using matt paint exclusively, but the same compositions and figural types are depicted. Often the drawing is not as careful, and his line not as steady. A lekythos in Basel[29]with a 'mistress and maid' is a good example. The figures are dryly drawn, the proportions not as well defined, and the figures stiffer, clear signs that the artist has aged.
