The Achilles Painter
John H. Oakley, The College of William and Mary in Virginia

6. Red-Figure: Late Phase

Table of Contents | Previous Section | Next Section

The latest red-figure vases date ca. 430 B.C., and in his Late phase the artist decorated only smaller shapes, such as Nolan amphora and lekythoi. Many of his most trivial works, small squat lekythoi with busts of figures, come from around this time. One in Oxford[17] with the bust of Artemis is a typical example. Many others were produced by other painters in his workshop, all anonymous except for several by the Phiale Painter, his student.
