About "Pheidias, Sculptor to the Gods"

Colin Delaney

I composed this "long project" for Prof. Gregory Crane's Spring 1997 class "Olympia & Delphi"at Tufts University, Medford, MA, USA, using the Perseus online database and traditional texts. This project expands upon and includes the earlier "short project" entitled "A Wonder to Behold". In working on that project, I also consulted the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Website.

Texts consulted include:

  • Leipen, Neda. Athena Parthenos: a reconstruction. Toronto: Hunter Rose Company, for the Royal Ontario Museum, 1971.
  • Richter, Gisela M.A.. The Sculpture and Sculptors of the Greeks. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1950.
  • Spivey, Nigel. Understanding Greek Sculpture: Ancient Readings, Modern Meanings. London: Thames and Hudson, 1996.
  • Vannoy, Charles. "Studies on the Athena Parthenos of Pheidias", University of Iowa Monographs. Iowa City: The University, 1917.
  • Walston, Charles. Essays on the Art of Pheidias. London: C.J. Clay and Son, Cambridge University Press Warehouse, year unknown.
