C205 Classical Mythology: Perseus Exercise

Due June 8, 1995

Using the searching capabilities of Perseus, find out what you can about two of the following:

Amphitryon
Amazons
Kyknos
Eurystheus
Prometheus freed by Hercules
Nemean lion
Iolaos (Iolaus)
Atalanta
Centaurs

In your answer, list or describe the different sources and kinds of evidence available in Perseus to discuss the topic, and summarize what you have been able to learn about the figures you have chosen. To what extent does the information on each seem to differ or be tied to one particular medium or time period, and what significance might that have?

Your answer need not be typed, but should be legible, and in complete sentences. A page on each figure should be sufficient.

To locate information, use the English Word Search and Object Keyword Search accessible from the Links menu at the top of the screen. Note that in the Object Keyword Search window, the boxes on the left hide drag down menus to help you define your search. You should consult both the Legendary People and the Iconographic Subject menus. The English Keyword Search will access both object and text sources, but its lists do not contain all the objects found in Object Keyword lists.

When a search reveals a great wealth of material, you need not consult it all, but you should try to identify the major sources while consulting a variety of media available. Note that Perseus has biography available on each author to provide background. Since Apollodorus wrote a handbook of mythology, you should consult him when possible.
