Here is what the Silent man himself says in his report dated the 22d of July, 1865: Immediately upon the enemy's ascertaining that General Hunter was retreating from Lynchburg by the way of Kanawha river , thus laying the Shenandoah Valley open for raids into Maryland and Pennsylvania, he returned [turned?] northward and moved down that valley.
