The Corliss Steam Fire Engine Company of Providence have just completed an engine of 120 horse power for a firm in Aberdeen, Scotland. A letter dated at Charleston, 13th instant, says: "The Typographical Union here has dissolved its connection with the national body." The human heart beats about seventy-two times in a minute; or in a life of sixty years, two thousand millions of times. The New Orleans papers announce the arrival in that city of Mrs. F. W. Pickens, the wife of the Governor of South Carolina. At a municipal election in Alexandria, Va., on Monday, Mr. Henry Addison, the Union candidate, was elected Mayor. S. N. Hollin worth, late Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, died on the 22d inst. General Forbes Britton, of Texas, is dead.

The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune,gives a most magniloquent account of the parade of Gen.Scott's mercenaries in Washington, and makes more fuss over the "great captain of the age," and his thousand men, than Parisians do over a review of sixty thousand French soldiers, under the leadership of the Duke of Malakoff, Marshall McMahon, and other such small military potatoes. We call attention, however, to the following paragraph, to show what it is that gives such exquisite zest to the military demonstrations in Washington — to the firing of cannon "pointed straight at Virginia's sacred shore --what would she say if their brazen throats were to vomit unbroken streams of grape in her venerable face?" Charleston and Liverpool merchant steamers. An intelligent Richmond gentleman who has lately visited Charleston, writes an interesting letter to a friend in this city, from which we make the following extract: "I may as well mention that a direct line of ocean steamers, to carry cotton and passengers between Charleston and Liverpool, is now a fixed fact. A meeting on the subject was held in Charleston on the afternoon of the 22d inst., and a large amount of the stock at once taken. One gentleman took $50,000 worth. Charleston furnishes $350,000, and Liverpool $400,000. The committee from Liverpool had secured the amount there before coming over. I have this from reliable authority. Business is said to be better in Savannah than usual. Is Richmond up and doing? If not, she would better be."
