Douw had previously been detailed to duty as Ordnance Officer of the Division. The movement ordered for the 31st of October was the beginning of a campaign under General McClellan to force General Lee back from the line of the Potomac. It was conceived and begun under the principle that had controlled all of General McClellan's strategy up to this time, viz., that military success consisted in strategic movements to force the enemy to abandon the positions he had occupied. If this could be done with little or no fighting all the better. This policy in so large a territory as intervened between Washingt
