Millions of acres of the public lands of the United States have been granted to aid in the construction of roads, canals, and railways; and also for educational and other purposes.
The first acts of Congress for the purpose of internal improvements were two for the new State of Ohio, which became laws on April 30, 1802, and March 3, 1803, respectively.
