Sequoyah, -1843 Tribal name of George Guess, a Cherokee half-breed; born about 1770; became widely known by his invention in 1826 of the Cherokee alphabet, which consists of eighty-five characters, and is used in printing and writing. He was also a skilful silversmith. He died in San Fernando, Mexico, in August, 1843.
