e intricacies of southern navigation, and they succeeded in obtaining their object, and before they had been three months on the southern coast every sound and inlet was as familiar to our officers as to the Southern pilots. This expedition brought back valuable information, ascertaining the position of forts, making reconnoissances on shore with the marines of the Savannah, until their progress was stopped by an unfordable stream and nothing more could be accomplished.
