e following year became an instructor in the school for deaf mutes at Talladega, Ala., his occupation at the time of the formation of the Confederacy. Resigning this position in May, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, Fifty-first Alabama regiment, Col. John T. Morgan, Martin's brigade and Wheeler's corps of cavalry, and was elected second lieutenant. He served with credit until he was captured at Murfreesboro, Tenn., June 27, 1863, after which he was imprisoned at Johnson's island until February 4, 1864, and was then held at Point Lookout for four months longer. After his exchange the impairment of eyesight caused by his imprisonment disabled him for duty and he was honorably discharged in May, 1864. He was the eldest of four brothers in the service. Thomas W. and Simeon D. served in the Eighth Georgia regiment, the latter losing his life in the Seven Days battles; and Richard V. was a member of the Fifty-first Alabama, was captured with his brother, and died in a hospital camp. guns and one Viii-inch rifle has always told with signal effect on the enemy. On the 19th of July, 1863, an English steamer attempted to pass into Charleston harbor, having eluded the outside blockade. The Catskill, Captain G. W. Rodgers, well up toward Moultrie, ran her on a shoal. Two or three other blockade-runners within the harbor afterward managed to escape, and one or two may have gotten in, but that ended the business of blockade-running at Charleston. On the morning of February 4, 1864, Bryson, in the monitor Lehigh, discovered a blockade-runner ashore on Sullivan's Island, outside of Moultrie. He opened fire at a distance of twenty-five hundred yards with an Viii-inch rifle and struck the vessel nine times in forty-two shots, and the following day used also a 12-pounder rifled howitzer. The first day the vessel was set on fire by the shells, but the flames apparently made little progress; on the second day she was again set on fire, and destroyed. Early in Febr
warmly in the report of Gen. S. D. Lee, who said: Col. Allen Thomas exhibited great gallantry and with his regiment did splendid service. Remaining at Vicksburg he served during the siege of May and June, 1863, in command of his regiment, which was greatly distinguished. General Shoup, commanding the Louisiana brigade, said, Col. Allen Thomas was constantly at his post. He was vigilant and energetic. He shared the fate of the prisoners of war, and was for some time under parole. On February 4, 1864, he was promoted to brigadier-general and assigned to General Taylor's department, where he had command of a brigade consisting of the Seventeenth, Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh, Twenty-eighth and Thirty-first Louisiana infantry, and Weatherby's Louisiana battalion. His brigade had not, however, been exchanged in time to participate in the spring campaign of 1864. When assembled it was assigned to the division of Gen. Camille J. Polignac. This division he was in charge of after Gener
