After a few hours' march, however, by the Huntersville road, the gladsome joy of joining so able a General as the invincible Lee was changed to the more gloomy reflections consequent upon another rough mountain march, as the head of our dense column "field right," bidding adieu to the cosy cabins and the rich, luxuriant fields of this beautiful valley, and were again hidden by towering pines and the thickly-matted laurel everywhere to be found in the vicinity of Cheat Mountain.
