arrest of the accused: [Affidavit of Gen. Winder.] Confederate States of America, Eastern District of Virginia, At the City of Richmond, to wit: On this day, 8th day of December, 1863, personally appeared before the undersigned, a Confederate States Commissioner in and for the District aforesaid, General John H. Winder, of the said city, who, being duly sworn, saith upon his oath that he believes that the papers shown to him, marked A, B, and C, are in the hand writing of Mary Arlene Allan, the wife of Patterson Allan, which papers were intercepted; by which act this affiant believes that the said Mary Caroline Allan is chargeable with treason in adhering to the ene- -mies of the Confederate States, in giving them aid and comfort by writing and sending, or attempting to send, a letter of advice and intelligence to the enemy aforesaid, sometime during the month of June, 1863. He, the said J. H. Winder, prays that the said Mary Caroline Allan be apprehended and held
