the sidewalks, and prescribing their construction, &c., was taken up and considered. Before coming to a vote, the ordinance was laid on the table, on motion of Mr. Hill. An ordinance providing for the effectual protection of persons performing work upon the public streets, lanes and alleys of the city, was taken up and considered, and the rules being suspended, on motion of Mr. Hill the ordinance was put on its passage and carried affirmatively. A petition was presented from Mr. W. C. Allen, asking the re-payment of certain fines improperly assessed against him. Referred to Finance Committee. Mr. Grattan, from the Finance Committee, reported an ordinance concerning the collection of city taxes. The ordinance, as reported amongst other changes, allows 5 instead of 10 per cent for speedy settlement. Mr. Howison opposed the proposed reduction. Messrs. Hill, Glazebrook and Denoon supported the amendment. After considerable discussion, on motion of Mr. Glazebrook,
