, A. J. Clark, J. D. Flagg, Thomas E. Bridge. The town-clerk during all the years of the war was John W. Wheeler. The town-treasurer during the same period was W. S. Ballou. 1861. May 6th, Voted, to raise five thousand dollars to arm and equip a company of volunteers, and to support their families. One dollar a day was allowed each man for drilling for thirty days under a drill-master, and ten dollars a month while in active service, in addition to the Government pay. Davis Goddard, H. Baker, Rodney Hunt, Levi Kilburn, and Admiral A. Ward, were appointed a committee to carry the vote of the town into effect, and to see that the families of the volunteers were properly cared for. The following resolution was adopted:— Resolved, That, in the present crisis of our national affairs (ignoring all political party divisions), it is the duty of all good citizens to come boldly forward and vindicate before the world the justice of our cause, and show our patriotism to the Union and

he President's objections to the bill were, that it gave to representatives in Congress power to appoint to office, which power was, by the Constitution, vested in the Executive. On motion, by Mr. Brown, of Mississippi, the bill was considered, the question being on its passage over the President's veto. After a long debate, in which Mr. Hill, of Georgia, alone sustained the objections of the President, the Senate passed the bill over the veto by the following vote: Yeas.--Messrs. Baker, Brown, Burnett, Garland, Graham, Haynes, Henry, Johnson of Missouri, Maxwell, Oldham, Semmes, Sparrow, Walker, Watson and Wigfall--15. Nays.--Messrs. Hill, Hunter and Vest--3. Mr. Sparrow introduced a bill to authorize the appointment of a commissary-general, with the rank of a brigadier-general. On motion, by Mr. Maxwell, the Senate resolved into secret session. Confederate States district Court. Judge Halyburton presiding.--John N. Davis was discharged from military service upon the ground of being a Nazarene minister of the gospel. Writs of habeas corpus were granted upon the petitions of the following members of Captain Walter F. Chew's company of artillery, they claiming to be citizens of other States outside of the Confederate States: James E. Dean, J. A. Lane, John A. Raley, J. H. Enis, J. T. Moore, W. T. Rensum, Y. Green, H. Baker, George A. Smith, T. G. Jackson, J. F. Green, J. P. Stewart and T. H. Parker. The writs were made returnable on Monday, the 30th instant. The court adjourned till 11 o'clock today.
