General Burnside entered the war in May, 1861, as colonel of the First losing his life early in the section.
On August 6, 1861, Burnside was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers, and fro ibed by Clinton Scollard in The daughter of the regiment. Burnside's attack on New Berne was part of the blockading movement on out of the woods, and charged the Confederate works.
