[Extra session.] Senate. Monday, January 30, 1865. The Senate was called to order at 11 o'clock A. M. Mr. Christian, of Middlesex, from the Committee on Public Institutions, presented a bill to amend and re-enact the act passed Marchs then taken on the passage of the bill, and resulted in the negative by the following vote: Yeas, 18; nays, 21. Mr. Christian, of Middlesex, offered a resolution, instructing the Committee on Public Institutions to inquire and report to the Sel were appointed a committee to wait upon Colonel Mosby and inform him of the action of the Senate. On motion of Mr. Christian, of Middlesex, the joint order of the day being the election of superintendent of the penitentiary, was then taken up. The President announced that the Senate was ready to receive nominations, when Mr. Christian, of Middlesex, put in nomination Colin Bass, the former superintendent. There being no other nominations, the Senate proceeded to an election, a
riff for taking the slaves: And the Court doth appoint William B. Conner, Second battalion, company D, Virginia reserves, as an overseer for a portion of said slaves, and doth advise all persons sending slaves to work on the fortifications to make provision for their support whilst they are so engaged, as the Government will pay for all food thus furnished. Mayor's Court. --The following cases; in addition to a dozen or so negroes, arrested some without papers and others with improper ones, who were whipped, occupied the attention of the Mayor yesterday morning: Joseph Burnett, a free negro, charged with assaulting and beating Susan Larmon, a white woman, with a stick, was committed for a hearing this morning. The case of Carter, slave of Franklin Stearns, charged with stealing a box of tobacco valued at six hundred dollars, the property of Robert J. Christian, was further continued in order to secure the attendance of material witnesses. Alexander Drake, white, was held to security for his good behavior in the sum of three hundred dollars, on the charge of assaulting and beating Cornelius Bransford. Samuel A. Carlisle, charged with stealing a paper of brads from Henry Hartman, was sent to the Provost-Marshal.
