The gun-boats attacked the fort by passing it in an ellipse he purpose of joining his command, which he had passed on the way up; when General Franklin telegraphed him that he was attacked by a superior force and desired the ath their heavy rifled guns, when the enemy retired.
It was the opinion of General Franklin's officers that the rapid and accurate fire of the gun-boats was greatly i they could go no farther, and in returning had to drop stern foremost.
General Franklin's object in advancing on West Point was to cut off the retreat of the Confby, John Connor, G. M. Fludder and E. W. Halcro.
