man, about forty-five years of age, was taken before Justice Neltless of Harriet county yesterday, to answer the charge of stealing a cow from Dr. John H. Garnett, of Henrico county, on Monday last.
The evidence proved that early on Monday morning, Dr. Garnett, missed the cow from his farm, which is about eight miles from the city; from tracks and other suspicious, also was subsequently traced to this city and found at the First Market, where she had been offered for sale by Spicer to Mr. George Freeman, of Manchester.
In company with the accused was a negro man, who, it is claimed by Spicer, employed him to sell the animal; but the truth of this statement is doubted.--Dr. Garnett stated before the Justice that the cow was an estray, and had been running with his own for about two years. He had taken proper steps to ascertain her owner, but no one had yet claimed her. At the conclusion to the evidence, the prisoner was sent on for examination before the County Court, and bail was ref
