I had acquired very little of it, proposed to me to study with the Rev. John Sylvester John Gardiner, Rector of Trinity Church, who was in the habit of preparing a ew pupils for Harvard College, and instructing others who had left college. Dr. Gardiner was a very good scholar, bred in England under Dr. Parr, and his teaching wa the Plague at Athens. This was the work of between two and three years. Dr. Gardiner's manners were kind and conciliating to me, and he always received me good-nterary culture. It was my first introduction to such society. I attended Dr. Gardiner for nearly three years, and acquired a love for ancient learning which I havid, in Harvard College.
