Suicide of a Negro. --A negro man, named Royall, slave of Benjamin Garrett, of Halifax county, Virginia, who had escaped from the batteries a few days since, but was subsequently arrested and committed to the Engineer Hospital building, on the corner of Nineteenth and Cary streets, jumped into the dock, near the Libby prison, on Thursday night, about half-past 10 o'clock, and was drowned. He had attempted his escape from the hospital, in company with another negro, when the guard on duty fired at but missed him. Royall continued his flight, but was pursued so closely that he ran for the dock, pitched in, and was drowned. His body was soon afterwards recovered, and Dr. Little, the coroner, called to view it; but, on learning the circumstances of his death, he declined to hold an inquest.
