ill speak to him by the gate. (Signed) Henry Hamilton. February 24th, 1779. I was at a great Colonel Clark's compliments to Lieutenant-Governor Hamilton, and begs leave to inform him that he will not agree to any terms other than Mr. Hamilton's surrendering himself and garrison prisoners at discretion. If Mr. Hamilton is desirous of a conference with Colonel Clark, he will meet him aturch, about 80 yards from the fort, Lieutenant-Governor Hamilton, Major Hay, superintendent of Indian, and await his fate. I then told Lieutenant-Governor Hamilton that hostilities should not commenck our leave, and parted but a few steps, when Hamilton stopped, and politely asked me if I would be pale and trembling, scarcely able to stand. Hamilton blushed, and, I observed, was much affected athe garrison capitulated: I. Lieutenant-Governor Hamilton engages to deliver to Colonel Clarknfidence in a generous enemy. Hamilton, Henry 1777-1796 Military officer; born in England; was lieutenant-governor of Detroit during the Revolutionary War. He was one of the most active promoters of Indian raids upon the frontier settlements of the Americans in the Northwest. To Detroit he summoned several Indian nations to a council late in 1777; and from that point he sent abroad along the frontiers bands of savages to murder and plunder the American settlers. In 1778 he wrote to Lord George Germaine (q. v.), whose favorite he was, Next year there will be the greatest number of savages on the frontier that has ever been known, as the Six Nations have sent belts around to encourage those allies who hav
