o lay down their arms and surrender to a very inferior force of Yankee cavalry, an order they refused to obey, and under command of their company officers (who prompted and supported their refusal) easily drove back the Yankees. Colonel Harry T. Hays and Lieutenant-Colonel De Choiseul of the Seventh Louisiana were both wounded here, the latter mortally. Major D. B. Penn now took command of the regiment. While at Somerset (Liberty Mills) near Gordonsville, on our way to the valley, Dr. F. W. Hancock, Division Medical Director, was seized with rheumatism, and having partially recovered from it, and attempted to join us near Front Royal, his horse was shot under him by a bushwhacker or straggling Yankee, and fell, severely injuring his leg, so that although he made out to reach us at Winchester, he was obliged to leave us again, and has been ever since suffering greatly from it, though persisting frequently in going on duty — when we last heard from him fears were entertained of his

it relates to dogs, horses and snakes. The most veracious of mankind seem to think themselves justified in telling big stories about these animals.-- Wonderful stories are told about Prince, because, we suppose, he was a wonderful dog.--He never, it is true, took up the wood to put on the fire, or whipped the puppies because they didn't help him. He slept by a coal fire and there were no puppies to whip. But he was in the habit of waking up a servant girl, who slept in the same room, and making her put on the coal. On one occasion, when she attempted to leave the room without doing it, he interposed between her and the door, and would not let her go out until it was done. We should mention that "Maffit" was a son of Prince, and that we saw one of his descendants the other day, very much like him, and said to be a fine dog. Mr. McMurdo was also owner of the stock from which Mr. Tait'sdog and "Zac" descended. We understand Dr. Hancock has one of the breed — a very fine dog.

The wounded. --Dr. F. W. Hancock, of this city, who has lately returned from Manassas, informs us that he went through all the camps, for the purpose of obtaining information as to the necessities of the wounded soldiers. They will continue to be sent to Richmond as rapidly as they are reported able to endure the fatigue of the journey, and those of our citizens who desire to throw open their doors for their accommodation, will soon have an opportunity. The committee having this matter in charge are untiring in their efforts to make the wounded men comfortable.
St. Charles Hotel. --This capacious establishment, so kindly tendered by the owners, Messrs. R. H. Dickinson and Geo. W. Yancey, has been converted into a regular Hospital by the committee appointed to attend on our wounded and sick volunteers. The committee deserve great praise for their untiring exertion and strict attention to the wants of our sick and wounded. There is in attendance a regularly organised corps of Surgeons, among whom are Drs. J. F. Jackson and F. W. Hancock, of Richmond; Dr. Tuff, of Washington, D. C., and Dr. Jones, of Maryland. There are 160, or more, patients in the building.
Dr. F. W. Hancock having been ordered to Gen. Ewell's Brigade, as Surgeon, will necessarily be absent from the city for a time. Those wishing his professional services will find his representative, Dr. James E. Williams, at his office, prepared to attend to their calls. Dr. James E.
