t appeared from the evidence that he was shot by a large ball, through a window, just as he had risen from supper, and expired immediately. Who perpetrated this heinous crime is still a mystery. His negroes were suspected; but they all testified severally that all of them were together in the road, on their way from the tobacco-house, about 150 yards from the house, when they heard the report of the gun or large pistol with which the deed was perpetrated. It was in evidence that he assisted in arresting some deserters several months ago, who threatened that they would shoot him, and one of Mr. Hillary Harris's negroes testified that about dusk that evening he saw two soldiers on horseback, with swords, who inquired if the road they were in led through Mr. Williams's farm, and being informed that it did, went on in that direction.--Still the negroes are yet strongly suspected, as he had that very day said he was afraid of them, and had made known his intention to sell some of them.
