m motives of benevolence and missionary duty. I was ordained in June, 1846. Herewith I transmit you an order of exercises. This ordination was the first occasion on which several hundred Unitarians ever sat down at dinner together in Connecticut. Dr. Parkman, of Boston, was president of the day. Dr. Dewey exchanged with me the Sunday before, and spent a week with me. At the collation, after the ordination services, delightful speeches were made by Messrs. Parkman, Dewey, Gray, Harrington, Hodges, Nightingale, Farley, Hale, Snow, &c., &c. On the 1st of September, 1847, for the sake of being near my father, and having some exchanges, which for two years I had been without, I settled in Haverhill, Massachusetts, though I did not get my dismission from Southington until September 19th, on account of the unwillingness of my people to let me go. John Hodges, Jr. was born in Salem, Massachusetts, Decembe1841, the son of John and Mary Osgood (Deland) Hodges. He attended school in his native city until of the company were rigid to the extreme, and Hodges showed his aptitude for true soldiership by thwn and the battle of West Point. At this time Hodges had become very much reduced by sickness, and dently powerless to suppress the disorder. Major Hodges stood on the promenade deck of the Niagara r a moment, and it was a critical moment. Colonel Hodges saw it, and dashing towards the color-serg0th, and then for the first time met Lieutenant-Colonel Hodges, in the crater, about two hours aftenth Michigan), both of them being wounded, Colonel Hodges through the thigh, Colonel Wright through regiments, the brave, generous, and ardent John Hodges.
