These four brigades form a much larger force than the Federal diroads lying considerably apart in this section of the country, and Kershaw's skirmishers having penetrated, by the head of the ravine, betweeSemmes along the Plank Road, Wofford on each side of the turnpike, Kershaw between the two.
This line is too weak to undertake any attacks ars to undergo long marches and hazardous manoeuvres.
Mahone's and Kershaw's brigades immediately began moving along the Plank Road, and shorormed perpendicularly to the road—Semmes, then Mahone on the left, Kershaw on the right.
Wilcox falls back on this line, and, posting himselith promptness.
Wofford has come to take position on the right of Kershaw, making thus five brigades as the total amount of forces gathered
