Burning cotton.
--The Raleigh State Journal says:
An officer of the Confederate army, who is engaged in this most important duty, tells us he burned not less than 1,553 bales for two persons alone, Messrs. Wm. Grimes and P. Atkinson.
He has already burned almost all the cotton at or near the water courses, in Washington, Pirt, Martin, and other counties, visiting the plantations even in the interior.
He assures us he was aided in this patriotic work cheerfully by the owners themselves, except in one case only.
But as a set off to this case, in another the owner had his burned, though the boat was at the landing to take it off. Not only the cotton has been burned, but large quantities of naval stores.
The buccaneers of the North got absolutely nothing in occupying Washington.
This is the true way to defend ourselves.
If the buccaneers get nothing, they will soon cause their marauding invasions of our country.
