The Daily Dispatch: June 18, 1862., [Electronic resource],
Experiments have lately been made at Washington which show that iron plates are not proof against rifle cannon shot. A target, composed of six iron laminated plates, completely riddled and broken up by two and-a-half pound leaden balls, is exhibited there. James Thrasher, a prominent merchant of London, who lately returned from, that city to Louisville, has been arrested by the military. Sir George St. Leger drenfell, a dashing cavalry officer, formerly of the British army, who distinguished himself in the Crimes and in Africa has joined our forces at Chattanooga. Federal reports say that among the recently captured prisoners in Southwestern Missouri are Jamp Massey, Gov. Jackson's Secretary of State, and two Confederate Colonels. A Washington dispatch to the New York Herald says-- "The condition of affairs in the Valley of Virginia is somewhat embarrassing. There are at present six Major-Generals with separate commands there."
