Matthews, Stanley 1824-1889
Jurist; born in Cincinnati, O., July 21, 1824; graduated at Kenyon College in 1840; admitted to the bar of Tennessee in 1845; appointed United States attorney for the Southern District of Ohio in 1858; commissioned lieutenant-colonel of the 23d Ohio Regiment in March, 1861; promoted colonel of the 57th Ohio in October, 1861; elected judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1873; United States Senator in 1876; appointed justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1881.
He died in Washington, D. C., March 22, 1889.
