Miller, Cincinnatus Heine 1841-
(better known as Joaquin Miller), author; born in Wabash district, Ind., Nov. 10, 1841; went with his parents to Oregon in 1850; subsequently engaged in mining in California, and studied law. In 1863 he edited the Democratic register, in Eugene, Ore., a weekly paper which was accused of disloyalty and suppressed; in 1863-66 practised law in Canton City, Ore.; and in 1866-70 was judge of Grant county, Ore. Later he went to London, where he published his first book of poems.
Returning to the United States he spent several years in newspaper work in Washington.
Since 1887 he has resided in Oakland, Cal. In 1897-98 he was correspondent for the New York Journal in the Klondike.
His publications include Songs of the Sierras; Songs of the Sunland; The ship of the Desert; Life among the Modocs; The one fair woman; Shadows of Shasta; Songs of far-away lands; 1849, or the gold-seekers of the Sierras; The life of Christ, etc. He has also written plays,
