, are a little better than a herd of sheep. Virginia now, more than ever, requires her sons to be prepared to protect her rights and redress her wrongs. New volunteer Company. --A volunteer company is now being raised here by Roscoe B. Heath, Esq., and his associates, one of whom is Charles S. Morgan, Jr., a West Point Cadet for over three years, who is thoroughly acquainted with the duty of the soldier and possesses the faculty of easily imparting information to recruits. The company now in process of formation by Mr. Heath is backed by men of ample means, and there is every assurance that they will be put on the best footing before entering the service of their country. We would advise all young men about joining a volunteer company to call at the office of this one, corner of 11th and Main streets. The uniforms and accoutrements cost nothing.
A gallant soldier. Among the "missing" from Gen. Jackson's army, so reported after the late battle at Greenbrier river, is George P, Morgan, Esq., of Marion county, formerly of this city. Mr. Morgan was one of the pickets who met the advancing foe, and, instead of retreating to camp, fought at their post gallantly for more Mr. Morgan was one of the pickets who met the advancing foe, and, instead of retreating to camp, fought at their post gallantly for more than an hour. He is (or was, for we know not his fate,) as noble a specimen of a man as Virginia can boast of. He is a brother-in-law of Senator Neeson and of Samuel Woods, Esq., of the State Convention, and a brother of the late Col. Chas. S. Morgan, of Richmond, and of Hon. W. S. Morgan, of Washington city. Thus connected, andCol. Chas. S. Morgan, of Richmond, and of Hon. W. S. Morgan, of Washington city. Thus connected, and a gentleman of means and having a family growing up around him, his patriotism induced him to leave his mansion and fine farm, and all their comforts and luxuries, to share the fate of a private soldier. Such a man, living or dead, deserves more honors than the laureled chieftain. We hope that he is yet alive.
Brutal Inhumanity. The case of Mr. Morgan, brother of Col. Chas. S. Morgan, one of our most esteemed, and respected citizens, who was torn from his home in Western Virginia and carried prisoner to Columbus, where he died, has naturally excited profound sympathy in every humane heart. He was a prominent and influential citizen of this State, and for no other crime than allegiance to his native Commonwealth was dragged off to the cattle pen at Columbus, and his dead body actually sent home Col. He was a prominent and influential citizen of this State, and for no other crime than allegiance to his native Commonwealth was dragged off to the cattle pen at Columbus, and his dead body actually sent home without, the common decency of a coffin, covered only by his prison clothes and his feet bare. In this condition he was delivered from the cars to his mourning friends, amongst the taunts and jeers of the Yankee soldiery ! How long shall these brutal watches trample with impunity on all that is sacred in humanity and decent in civilization?
