When I went to the rear, a staff officer informed me that General Terry desired all the marines and sailors who had arms to occupy the right of General Paine's line; that the rebels were demonstrating there.
Though it was nearly dark, I succeeded in getting about one hundred and eighty (180) marines behind the breastworks, near General Terry's headquarters, where they remained until morning.
