Violent assault. --A young and genteel looking man, called Frank Pendleton, alias. Barrett, made his appearance before the Mayor yesterday to answer the charge of violently assaulting and beating a young woman who gave her name as Lelia Smith. The assault was so very cruel that the accused was required to give bail for his future good behavior in the sum of $500, and to enter into security to answer an indictment by the Grand Jury in the sum of $700.

The Court sentenced him to six months in the city jail and to be employed in the chain gang. On another charge against the same party for assaulting and beating Henry C. Hazelgrove in a gaming room on 13th street, he was found guilty and fined $10. The Court sentenced him to three months imprisonment in jail.
