Gallantry in battle.
The cool and gallant conduct of Capt. William George Pollard, of the 53d Virginia infantry, in the two days combat below Richmond, is worthy of the highest praise.
When almost left alone by the rest of his regiment, in the engagement of Sunday, he seized the colors and rebelled a number of brave spirits, who nobly stood their ground regardless of danger, and determined to defend their position to the last.
instances of individual gallantry were numerous on those two bloody days, but none were more conspicuous than the one we have mentioned.
