ackside for a study. On the death of Mrs. Abbott in 1763, there was a public funeral, and the amount raised was £ 414 4s. 10d., or, in lawful money, £ 55 4s. 7d. At the funeral of the worthy gentleman himself, who was buried at the expense of the town, some of the charges were: For twelve gold rings, £ 8; for Lisbon wine, Malaga wine, and W. I. rum, £ 5 16s. 8d.; for lemons, sugar, pipes, and tobacco, £ 3 8s. 6d.; gloves, £ 40 1s. 6d.; deathshead and cross bones, fifteen shillings. The Rev. Thomas Prentice died June 17, 1782, and that day a special town meeting was called, to see what action the citizens would take relative to the funeral. Late in 1751 this little community suffered from a visitation more terrible than that which came upon Master Sweetser's boys,—the smallpox broke out, though not for the first time.
