Retreat from Nashville.
Now commenced one of the most disastrous retreats of the war. Seventy-two pieces of artillery wer gh they maintained their position.
The ordnance train, temporarily under the command of Lieutenant Ritter, arrived at Tuscumbia, Ala., on the evening of the 26th, where it remained three days, wai Columbus, Miss., as no howitzers were then used in the Army of Tennessee.
On the 20th, Lieutenant Ritter was promoted to the captaincy by the following special order:
