the part of those whom I have had the honor to represent for the past twelve years in the City Council, and now honored with a seat in the Legislature of Virginia. excited in my bosom the liveliest emotions. The position is one, in my humble judgment, which should be neither sought nor avoided, unless for good reasons; but as I am now holding two offices by your kindness, and the Convention and General Assembly will be sitting at the same time, both demanding The constant attention of the members, would make it incompatible with your interest that I should accept of a seat in the Convention, if it were your pleasure to bestow it upon me, I must, therefore, respectfully decline becoming a candidate. I will say in conclusion, that I most earnestly desire that the interests of this proud old Commonwealth may not be placed in the hands of any who will not secure her safety in the Union, if practicable; if not, out of it. Sick. --David J. Saunders, member of the House of Delegates from this city, has been detained from his seat for about ten days past by reason of sickness.

of organizing, and were sworn in by Alderman Sanxay. After this ceremony was concluded N. B. Hill, of Jefferson Ward, moved that R. O. Haskins be appointed temporary Chairman. Carried. L. W. Glazebrook, of Monroe Ward, then moved that David J. Saunders, the former incumbent, be re-elected President of the Council. Carried. Messrs. City Council. --The monthly meeting of this body was held yesterday afternoon. Present--Messrs. Saunders, Grattan, Denoon, Haskins, Critchfield, Stokes, Griffin, Scott, Eppes, Burr, Glazebrook, and Hill. Mr. Stockes presented a report from the Commissioners of Schools in Jefferson Ward, respecting the unauthorized use oyed in signing the small notes issued by the city, respectfully recommend the payment of the following sums to persons employed in the said service, viz: To David J. Saunders $1,000; Thomas Lawson $300; M. L. Stratton $200; D. J. Saunders, Jr., $200; John Saunders $300; Moseby C. Stratton $150; David J. Burr $200; P. R. Grattan $2D. J. Saunders, Jr., $200; John Saunders $300; Moseby C. Stratton $150; David J. Burr $200; P. R. Grattan $200; P. W. Ralston $150. Total, $2,700. The Governor appointed, on the 20th inst. Richard O. Haskins, Samuel C. Robinson, N. C. Read, and William Rutherfoord, Directors on the part of the State in the Farmers' Bank of Virginia; and Jos. Jones, Charles R. Barksdale, David J. Saunders, and John L. Bacon, like Directors in the Bank of Virginia, at Richmond.
City Council. --A called meeting of the City Council was held at 4 o'clock, on yesterday evening, at the City Hall. Present: David J. Saunders, President; James M. Talbot, N. B. Hill, David J. Burr, Peachy R. Grattan, Fleming Griffin, Thomas C. Epps, James H. Scott, George K. Crutchfield, and Thomas H. Wynne. Mr. Scott presented an application, in the name of John H. Greanor, for the allowance of the ten per cent. (amounting to $38.08) in his tax bill of 1861 --said party having been absent from the city in the military service of the Confederate States at the time when it was paid. On his motion, it was refunded to the said Greanor. The President laid before the Council the following communications, as the basis of the call for the meeting of the Council, which were read: Headquarters Tredegar battalion, Richmond, 19th Feb. 1862.
