Bagus D --On Monday night three men visited the house of Mr. Schwartz, a butcher living below Rockets, and finding him absent from home, represented themselves as Confederate detectives, who had been sent there to search for forged passports. In the absence of Mr. S., his wife protested that no such documents were secreted about the house, but the fellows insisted on searching, and finding in a trunk about $250 in gold, $300 in silver, and $500 in greenbacks, they took it in charge, and ey were about leaving the premises, with the trunk containing the money in their hands, Mrs. S. was informed that if she called at General Gardner's (formerly General Winder's) office at nine o'clock the next (yesterday) morning, she would learn what disposition had been made of her funds. Accordingly Mrs. Schwartz called at the appointed hour, but it is needless to say that the trunk and contents had not been carried there, nor were the men ever engaged in the Confederate detective service.
