of stealing two cords of wood from Mr. James E. Moore. The case was made out against them, and they were each (with the exception of Charles who was bailed to appear) ordered to be whipped — the men to receive 30 lashes, the women 15. Charles Schwartz, a white man, said to be a Yankee deserter, was charged with stealing a home from C. T. Gunter. Partial owner-ship of the animal in dispute was claimed by Schwartz, who said he could produce a receipt to that effect; but, falling to do so owith stealing a home from C. T. Gunter.
