The Daily Dispatch: March 18, 1861., [Electronic resource], The Army of the Southern Confederacy. (search)
"light from above," reflected from sixty gas jets in the dome; a novel arrangement, but certainly a pleasing one. Our chief purpose, however, in writing this notice, is to allude to the new organ, which was subjected to a trial on Saturday night. It is a large instrument, and in tone compares favorably with any organ that we ever heard. The volume of sound, when put up to its full capacity, with the substantial ground-work of sub-base, approaches the grandest sublimity of music, while the softer stops, when separately used, are full of sweet melody. The glorious tune of "Old Hundred" was selected to exhibit the power of the instrument, and "Sweet Home" illustrated the pleasing harmony of its distinctive qualities. Quite a large auditory of ladies and gentlemen were in attendance, and all seemed highly gratified with the result. The organ was manufactured by George Stevens & Co., of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Chase, of this city, has been appointed to the position of organist.
