The regiment arrived at Washington, December 11, 1861, and went into camp near the capitol. It commenced active service in Virginia, January 2, 1862, performing picket duty, with an occasional reconnoissance, until April 5, 1862, when it sailed for the Peninsula with General McClellan's Army. It served there in Richardson's Division — afterwards Hancock's — remaining in that division (1st Division, 2d A. C.) until the end of the war.
