A coincidence. In 1763 John, Duke of Bedford, the great grandfather of the present Earl Russell, negotiated the treaty of Paris. The treaty was so disadvantageous to England, whose forces, botthis well-known failing gave a color to the story. From this charge, among others, the Duke of Bedford was defended by various writers in Woodfall's paper at the time, and of late days by Lord Mahond that among the Woburn papers and correspondence, lately published, was a diary of the Duke of Bedford in question, kept while he resided at Paris on this mission, some portions of which, if they diry far to mitigate its heinousness. This charge of bribery was brought against the Duke of Bedford in 1764, the transaction on which it was founded having occurred the year before.
