A surprise
--The Abingdon Virginian hears a discouraging rumor from Gen. Hodges's command, on its late expedition into Kentucky.
It appears that, after skirmishing with a superior force of the enemy at Paintsville they fell back a few miles, turned their horses out to graze, and lay down to rest.
In this condition they were surprised by the enemy, who approached them from an unexpected and unguarded direction.
The consequence was that were scattered and stampeded, several killed, wounded, and captured.
Among the wounded was Lieut. Col. Clay, who was also captured.--About 100 are reported as missing.
